Did you see the movie, Julie & Julia? It came out a few years ago with Meryl Streep
playing Julia Child, and Amy Adams playing a young writer named Julie Powell who
decides to cook all 524 recipes in Child’s cookbook. Every day for a year, Julie whips up a new
recipe and then blogs about it. Some days are culinary disasters, and poor
Julie not only bulks up from all that butter she also has to deal with the stress on her marriage.
But she perseveres, and pretty soon Julie’s
got so many readers, she winds up with a book deal and a movie.
I was thinking about Julie & Julia, which happens to
be a true story, and I decided it’s time to get more readers for this blog. So I
googled the subject, and here’s the advice I found.
1. Give away free stuff.
Great idea. Yeah, but what should I give away?
And to whom? Actually, the person who made
this suggestion said his blogs are in Norwegian. Seriously. So maybe this is just
a Scandinavian thing.
2. Educate
Readers about RSS
Brilliant! I think everyone should be
educated about RSS, including me. And as soon as I find out what it is, I’ll let
you know all about it. I promise.
3. Guest Bloggers
Anyone interested? I’m certainly open to this one. Oh,
and it would be even better if you’ve got your own blog, and you can link to my
site, and then I’ll link to yours.
4. Be Opinionated
Hey, no problem here. In blogs 1-13, I’ve
voiced lots of opinions, and I’ve got even more where those came from. In fact,
one opinion is that blogs are a lot of work (not that I’m complaining). A
second opinion is that finding readers is even more work.
And for good measure, I'm throwing in a third opinion: I’m turning 60 in
45 days. Smart people do this in silence.
